Cdx Family
The Cdx or caudal gene family includes three human and mouse genes, one amphioxus gene and the Drosophila gene caudal (cad). The three human/mouse Cdx genes (Cdx1, Cdx2, Cdx4) were generated by genome duplication at the base of the vertebrates. The amphioxus AmphiCdx gene is part of the ParaHox gene cluster (Brooke et al. 1998). In human, the CDX2 gene is part of the ParaHox gene cluster; the other two Cdx genes are in paralogous regions of the genome (Pollard and Holland, 2000). In zebrafish and pufferfish there are also three Cdx genes, though these are not 1:1 equivalents of the mammalian Cdx genes due to duplication via the '3R' teleost-specific genome duplication and then gene loss: this left two copies of Cdx1, one of Cdx4 and no Cdx2 (Mulley et al. 2006).
