Msx Family
The Msx or Msh homeobox gene family is named after the Drosophila gene muscle segment homeobox (msh), now renamed Drop. Humans have two Msx family genes, MSX1 and MSX2, generated by genome duplication early in vertebrate evolution. A third Msx gene (Msx3) generated by the same duplication events has been lost in humans, but is present in mice (Shimeld et al. 1996). An additional human Msx sequence, originally thought to be MSX4, is actually a reverse transcribed pseudogene generated from MSX2 (MSX2P1). Comparative genomics indicates that an ancestral Msx gene was originally part of the NK homeobox gene cluster.
