The Pou5 gene family contains two human genes: POU5F1 and POU5F2. The latter is also called SPRM1. The POU5F1 gene has generated eight retrotransposed pseudogenes, although some cover only a small part of the transcript (Holland et al. 2007). No invertebrate orthologues have been found, even in amphioxus, suggesting the Pou5 gene family arose in vertebrate evolution by duplication and divergence from a different Pou gene family.|
